Why We Need You

Network Rail specialise in the maintenance and development of Britain’s rail tracks, signalling, bridges, tunnels, level crossings and many key stations. With new world-class stations being built, they are involved in some of the most ambitious and diverse ventures that this country has ever seen.

This company has a fantastic track record for developing and investing in a number of apprentices in the past; all of which have secured permanent positions at the company. You will be well trained and supported throughout your apprenticeship and even have access to some fantastic perks, such as 75% off of your rail costs!

They are now recruiting x3 Finance Apprentices to join their Accounting Services team to complete a 33 month AAT apprenticeship programme, which includes the level 3 and 4 AAT programmes. This role is an entry level scheme designed as an alternative route to University. You will receive training (in the classroom as well as while working) to become a chartered accountant, progressing to CIMA, ACCA or ACA.

As a finance apprentice and a key member of the finance team, the role will involve liaising with people from all departments and at all levels. As a Finance professional, you’ll inform multi-million pound decisions and directly influence the development, growth and operation of their railway.

Overview of duties:

  • Assist with periodic financial reports and forecasting
  • Provide support with ad hoc projects as dictated by the business area
  • Undertake ad hoc accounting assistance
  • Completion of a special project in a specific Finance/Management accounting topic, and provide a completed report/presentation
  • General administrative duties work as required

Our railway lines are the economic arteries of our nation where every day, more than 4.6 million journeys are made in the UK. Network Rail owns, operates and develops Britain’s railway infrastructure – that’s 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts, and thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway for Britain.

The number of passenger journeys undertaken on Britain’s railways has doubled over the past 20 years. We help the railway network to grow and improve in response to that tremendous growth and demand – and our apprentices are at the heart of that work.

Network Rail is investing more in engineering projects than any other UK organisation.

We carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year as part of the multi-billion-pound Railway Upgrade Plan – it’s an exciting place to be and offers real opportunity to make a difference through contributing to the biggest transformation project on the rail network since the change from coal to diesel.

As an engineering apprentice with Network Rail, you’ll have three amazing years on the scheme with the first phase of the scheme being spent living and learning at one of our dedicated training centres; Westwood and HMS Sultan. Following that, you’ll join a depot close to home where you’ll get out an about on the network specialising in distribution & plant, overhead lines, signalling, track or off-track.

You will be expected to have achieved Five GCSE grades 4 – 9 with grade 4 in English and Maths or equivalent and be predicted/achieved Two A-Levels grades A-C or BTEC equivalent at grade Merit or above.

Excellent communication skills. Having a strong business acumen and an aptitude for numbers is also advantageous coupled with good ICT skills (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word etc.)

You will need to be confident with a pro-active attitude. You should have good attention to detail and be highly organised with the ability to manage activities within agreed timelines as well as balancing work and exams.

Ideally, they want to recruit someone who has a genuine interest in accounting and commitment to progress on to Professional qualifications, such as CIMA to become a chartered accountant.
